This past week I spent visiting my brother in San Francisco and exploring the whole city with one of my best friends, Maddy. What amazed me while I was away was that I felt God’s presence so distinctly, all around me. I saw His glory revealed to me in the smallest things. Then, a few days in I asked myself “why must I go on vacation to feel this unique nearness of God’s presence?”
I asked God this question and His answer was very simple. He said, “begin with rest and allow me to pour into you before you try doing everything yourself.”
Oh, okay. Simple.
God has been taking me on a “rest journey” where step by step He is showing me how to REALLY rest. What God showed me, shocked me because it is completely contrary to how this world runs, to how I am used to running – work really hard, collapse, rest, repeat.
Now I know, God’s design was for us to rest and work from the overflow, never to burn out.
See, God created man and the first thing He did, with dust still on His hands, was got down in the dirt to “bless them” (Genesis 1:28). Can you believe that? Before He asked us to do anything, not one thing, He blessed us.
Maybe you think like me too. I must work really hard to deserve the rest or I have to perform well to be prepared to fall into the Father’s arms. That was never His plan.
The first full day Adam spent in the garden was the Lord’s day of rest. He had the Father’s FULL attention that first day. He had one hundred percent attention from God before He began any work! He had rest before he got busy.
Our lives echo dependency. To rest in the Father is a necessity and I realized that my cycle needs to change or I will never live sustainably.
From the words of Adrian Rogers,
“Everything is from Him and through Him and goes back to Him”.
I have been so easily tricked into thinking backwards but I know I’m not the only one. Coming home from my trip I knew I must change the way I rest. If everything is from Him, goes through Him and goes back to Him, then I must first rest in His presence to accomplish anything worth accomplishing.
Are you with me? Do you ever feel like you’re not reaching your full potential because you don’t have the direction or energy to do it? Maybe you are constantly feeling like you’re about to run out of steam like I have…
Join me today and let’s rest first so we can both enjoy working from the overflow.
